For parents and guardians

One app’s screen time becomes a learning break.

You choose one entertainment app and how long it may be used. When that time runs out, Lock n Learn pauses it and shows a learning challenge. A correct answer gives another period of use. Your parent PIN can unlock it too.

Android app, package com.locknlearn.app. The Play button opens the store listing for that package. The listing is available once the app is published.

How it works

1

Pick one app

You choose the entertainment app to time. YouTube Kids is the suggested starting point. Only time in that app counts.

2

Set the time

You set how long that app may be used before the next learning break. A one-minute allowance is included so you can test the flow.

3

A learning challenge

When the allowance runs out, a “Time to learn!” screen covers the chosen app. Questions follow England National Curriculum topics stored in the app, for Reception to Year 6.

4

A correct answer restores access

A correct answer, or a finished writing task that meets the word goal, starts another period of use. A wrong answer gets a hint. The answer itself is not shown.

5

Your parent PIN

You can unlock with your PIN without answering the challenge. The PIN is stored only as a salted hash on the phone. It is a family-trust control, not a lock against someone who has full access to the device.

What the app includes

A plan you choose

School year, subject (maths, English, science, writing, or a mix), and a session that is a set of questions, a timed practice, or a writing word goal.

Nothing leaves the phone

There is no account, no internet use by the app, no ads, and no analytics. Writing drafts stay in the app’s private storage.

The rest of the phone stays usable

The cover names Lock n Learn and has a Home button. The phone app, emergency features, Settings, and apps you did not choose are not blocked.

You can stop it

Turn protection off with your PIN, revoke the permissions, or uninstall the app. Lock n Learn is not a device-admin lock and it can be uninstalled.

Permissions, explained plainly

Android asks for sensitive permissions because the app has to notice one chosen app and show a screen over it. Each one is explained again, in full, on the permissions page.

  • Usage access tells the app which package is in the foreground, so it can time the one you chose. It does not see videos, messages, or passwords.
  • Display over other apps draws the “Time to learn!” cover. It does not read what is underneath.
  • Notifications keep a persistent “Lock n Learn is on” notice, and a tap can open the challenge if Android will not open it automatically.
  • Accessibility is optional. The app works without it. It is not an accessibility tool. If you turn it on, it reads only a package name and can send the device Home.

A persistent notification is shown on purpose. This is not a hidden monitor. Some phones still stop background apps; the support page covers battery and autostart settings.

Questions parents ask

Is this an app for children to install?

No. A parent or guardian installs it, sets the PIN, and chooses the app and the time. A child may see the learning challenge on that device. There is no child account. The Play listing is aimed at adults.

Does it block the whole phone?

No. It times one app. Calls, emergency features, Settings, and other apps stay available. The cover includes a Home button.

Can someone uninstall it?

Yes. It is a family-trust tool. A person who can open Settings can turn the permissions off or uninstall the app. Do not rely on it as a tamper-proof lock.

Does it need the internet?

No. Questions are stored in the app. It does not create an account and it does not send usage, answers, or drafts to the developer. Optional NextDNS steps only build a hostname and can open Android’s network settings. The app does not contact NextDNS.

Where do the questions come from?

They are practice questions for England National Curriculum topics, Reception to Year 6, bundled with the app. A writing task checks the word count you set. It does not grade the quality of the writing.

What happens to data if we delete the app?

Uninstalling, or clearing the app’s storage, deletes the PIN hash, the chosen app, the learning plan, today’s counts, and any writing draft. There is no copy on a server. See delete app data.
